The Oscars - Will Smith stuns Hollywood

Will Smith has won his first Oscar, just minutes after rushing on to the stage and slapping comedian Chris Rock in the face.

Winning an Oscar is the pinnacle of any actor's career. But moments before Will Smith was announced as best actor for his role in King Richard, he strode purposefully onto the stage and smacked Chris Rock across the face. It was in response to a joke made by Rock about the actor's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, referring to Pinkett Smith's shaved hairdo. Rock said: "Jada, can't wait for GI Jane 2" - referring to the 1997 film GI Jane, in which Demi Moore played the title role with a buzzcut. Pinkett Smith has previously spoken about having the hair loss condition alopecia.
During his acceptance speech, Smith said: "I want to apologise to the Academy. I want to apologise to my all my fellow nominees. Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things."

The event has overshadowed everything else from the event. Coda won best film, beating movies including The Power of the Dog and Belfast. Jane Campion took the best director award for The Power of the Dog. And Jessica Chastain claimed best actress for The Eyes of Tammy Faye.
