Josie KO’s sculptures emit a burst of colour and mischief, but beneath the gaudy knitted skirts and over-the-top wigs lies a more serious message.
After reading Scottish poet William Dunbar’s poem Of Ane Blak-Moir, one of the first recorded documents of the presence of black people in Scotland, Josie took the racist caricatures of the poem and turned them on their head, using DIY and papier maché to create figures that are difficult to ignore.
