Why is #PutSouthAfricanFirst trending in South Africa?
The social campaign is pressuring businesses to hire local citizens, rather than immigrants
βPut South Africa Firstβ started as a movement of organisations who were against illegal immigration.
It has since grown. The hashtag #PutSouthAfricanFirst has been trending in South Africa every day for months.
There have also been marches, protests, social media campaigns in support.
And pressure is also being put on companies to hire local citizens, even over totally legal immigrants.
The movement has caused concern among some observers.
Unemployment is a hot topic in South Africa. It is, of course, a country where thousands of people from across the continent come to live and work.
But nearly 35% of the population are currently out of work.
So what is really happening with this campaign? Is it just a front for anti-immigrant sentiments and motives?
