Parties in Downing Street – an admission, an apology, and calls for the PM to resign

Opposition MPs call for the PM to resign. He acknowledged there were things the government simply did not get right but he believed the event was work related.

At a dramatic Prime Minister's Questions in the Commons, Boris Johnson has rejected calls from opposition parties for his resignation - despite admitting he attended a drinks event in the garden of Downing Street during the first lockdown of the pandemic. Mr Johnson apologised and acknowledged there were things the government "simply did not get right" - but he insisted he thought the gathering in May 2020 was related to work. The Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer, said the Prime Minister's defence was "offensive" to the public -- and he was a "man without shame".
