Migrant Channel crossings: Is there a viable long term solution?
The frequency of small boat crossings has risen significantly in the last year - but the actual numbers tell a very different story on asylum.
Fewer people have come by land or air because of the pandemic and total asylum claims actually fell by 4% in the year to June 2021.
Nevertheless, Britain will remain an attractive proposition to all those fleeing their own countries or hoping for a better life here.
With the options for safe, legal routes very limited, what is our long term solution to this problem? And can we solve it without help from our closest neighbours?
