CBI says lack of rail improvements could prevent skilled staff coming to the Humber region

The organisation which speaks on behalf of businesses across Northern Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire says the lack of rail investment in the Humber region could hamper firms attracting skilled staff. The Government announced its Β£96 Billion Integrated Rail Plan today which sets out the government's proposals to transform the rail network in the North and Midlands. Becki Hart, the Regional Director for Yorkshire and the Humber at the CBI (Confederation of British Industry) says "We do know that good transport links can help businesses attract skilled staff to a region and obviously we're just post COP26 and the eyes are really on the Humber at the moment and how it is going to decarbonise. So getting cars off the road and getting people onto trains would have obviously speeded up that process." Listen to Becki Hart's interview in full here with Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Political Reporter Sarah Sanderson. Many campaigners were disappointed at the lack of plans to electrify the Hull to Selby railway line. When asked about this, a spokesperson for the Department for Transport said "There are many benefits to Hull as a result of the Integrated Rail Plan. Passengers will benefit directly from accessing improved services at Hull due to enhancing the scope of the Transpennine Route Upgrade. They will also be able to reasonably access an even wider range of services through other nearby regional hubs. Some will see improved journey times to Manchester by over 30mins, which will be realised in the shorter term."
