‘My words have opened doors for me, my journey proves there is life after prison’
Lady Unchained AKA Brenda Birungi began her love for poetry whilst serving her prison sentence.
She’s now an author, poet and presenter of her own show ‘Free Flow’ on Prison Radio.
She told 5 Live Drive’s Tony Livesey and Clare McDonnell how writing became an outlet for expressing her feelings whilst in prison.
Lady Unchained was speaking to 5 Live for the station’s Word Matters project, a special season of programmes and events looking at adult literacy.
It’s estimated that nine million adults in the UK find doing things like filling out forms, writing birthday cards or reading bedtime stories a struggle.
