From Cairo to America via Finland: Awak Kuier’s journey to the WNBA
Africa born Awak Kuier is creating history this season becoming the first player from Finland to compete in the WNBA after being selected second overall by the Dallas Wings in the 2021 draft.
Born in Cairo, Kuier is the daughter of South Sudanese parents who moved to Finland when she was two years old and had been playing her basketball professionally in Italy before her move to the USA.
Lee James spoke to Kuier about her journey to the WNBA and her desire to help with the league’s ongoing quest to strive for justice and equality.
