To mark the Jewish new year, Michael Freedland reflects on the turbulent events of the previous 12 months – starting with the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Michael also speaks to Denzil Sebag-Montefiore about his brother the bishop and to former prime minister Harold Wilson on his son the kibbutznik, as well as listening to Yiddishist Leo Rosten, cantor Richard Tucker – and the voice of former Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz, in an archive recording from 1943. He also speaks to Israel’s foreign minister, Abba Eban.

This is a programme from the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ archive, originally broadcast on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio in the 1970s. Aspects of the programme reflect the time when it was made and due to rights considerations, the music may be shorter than in the original programme.
