Dozens of people have been injured in violent clashes in East Jerusalem between far-right Jewish activists, Palestinians and Israeli police.

Hundreds of ultranationalist Jews shouting "Death to Arabs" confronted Palestinian demonstrators at the city's Damascus Gate late on Thursday.

The police, who were trying to keep the two groups apart, used stun grenades and tear gas against the protesters, some of whom threw stones and bottles.

Seth Frantzman is a correspondent with the Jerusalem Post who was covering the protests. He says tension has been building up for days.

"There were several of these TikTok videos of Orthodox Jewish men who go to the old city to pray being attacked by youths or having their hats torn off or being punched in the face. And then Jewish youth from another part of the city, downtown where lots of people are out drinking, some hooligans go out to attack Arabs who are nothing to do with the incidents."
