Archaeological dig to commence at historic Weymouth street
In recent years, archaeology has taken on an increased level of increased popularity.
This year saw the highly acclaimed film 'The Dig' released on Netflix about the discovery of an Anglo-Saxon ship at a site in Suffolk in 1939. And just under a decade ago, the remains of King Richard the Third were found under a car park in Leicester.
This week, a project gets underway to help establish the historical origins and development of Weymouth. Archaeologists will be dig up the site of a famous bloody battle during the Civil War in 1645. The medieval High Street runs behind the former Weymouth and Portland Borough Council offices close to the Boot Inn pub. Dorset Council has commissioned south west heritage and archaeology specialists Context One to dig four exploratory trenches.
Laurence Herdman met the two founder members of the "Dig the Street" community group which has campaigned for the excavation, Claire Whiles and Mark Vine.
