Classics with NOW: Suk, FantastickΓ© Scherzo Op. 25
Josef Suk was a Czech composer and violinist, trained in music from a young age. Suk’s early style was influenced by his teacher and mentor, Dvořák, but he developed as a composer at the impact of other composers such as Debussy, Mahler and Strauss.
Suk’s expressive Fantastické Scherzo is certainly tuneful, with both a sprightly woodwind theme and a memorable, lilting Czech tune on middle strings and cellos. Its dazzling and joyous finale is also not to be missed!
This performance by Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ NOW took place in 2002 under the baton of much-loved conductor Richard Hickox, at St David’s Hall, Cardiff.
