"You are either perpetuating inequality or you are challenging it"

International Women’s Day is a chance to celebrate the social, economic and political achievements of women but, it is an opportunity to highlight how much work there is still to do.

It was, after all, only earlier this year that the UK government passed laws to formalise paid maternity leave for government ministers.

According to the UN, women are twice as likely to lose their jobs in the pandemic than men... with the gap between men and women in poverty likely to widen. The group UN Women suggests the pandemic could set gender equality back 25 years.

This year’s theme is Choose to Challenge - and our reporter Nisha Patel has been speaking to to Judy Gitau, Regional co-ordinator of Equality Now's Africa branch, 21-year-old Girl Guide Isabella Caldes in Brazil and long-term campaigner Helen Pankhurst in the UK. Three women, on different continents - who are challenging preconceptions and prejudice
