In Perpetuum

Sam organises a virtual funeral for her brother inside their favourite video game

When Sam's brother passes away, she organises a virtual funeral for him inside their favourite childhood video game, In Perpetuum. Her closest friends log in and join her - but the server is old and unstable. As the world breaks down around them, Sam realises her brother might not be as far away as she thinks.

In Perpetuum is set in a surreally beautiful and dreamlike video game. This bespoke world was created in Unreal, and all the in-game scenes were shot virtually inside the engine. This unique workflow offered total freedom to create truly breathtaking environments and capture stunning shots which would have been very difficult to achieve using traditional CG production techniques.

The final film blends this Unreal footage with live action and voiceovers to tell a powerful story about how we process grief in a digital world. In Perpetuum is about what we leave behind in virtual spaces, and how our loved ones deal with our digital footprints when we’re gone. It’s not explicitly a quarantine story, but it does touch on how we can support each other and perform social rituals without being in the same space.
