Senator Ted 'CanCruz' feels the heat as Texas freezes

A massive storm which has swept across the southern US has seen temperatures plummet to record lows. Senator Ted Cruz, after being condemned for taking his daughters on holiday to the Mexican resort of CancΓΊn at a time when millions of people in his state were surviving blackouts and had been told to boil their tap water, has returned to Texas and admitted it was "obviously a mistake" to take the vacation.

So how has this all played out in Texas? Chris Tomlinson, a columnist for the Houston Chronicle, explains the reaction.

"We have elected officials delivering food and checking up on the elderly. There's so many things that he could be doing to demonstrate leadership to Texans, that sneaking out on a plane to CancΓΊn just seems like something a coward would do. And I think that's the overwhelming opinion."
