Love Bade Me Welcome

Composer: John Tavener
Conductor: Rupert Gough
Performers: Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Singers
Recording date: 1 March 2018
Broadcast date: 2 May 2018

The choral music of John Tavener is now iconic, in no small part due to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Singers performance of the Song for Athene at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales in September 1997. There is a haunting simplicity to Tavener’s setting of the words of the 17th century priest and poet George Herbert in Love Bade me Welcome. Tavener does not detract from the text. The tune depicts love, the voice describing how he/she is welcomed by love. Love is personified, as if it can speak and interact in a human way.
