Stock theft in South Africa
Sheep are the most sought-after farm animal in the country for criminals, they’re easy to steal and herd away in large numbers, easy pickings for stock thieves. Last year 62 923 sheep were stolen and nearly 40 thousand cattle were taken, and most of the meat made its way to the plates of unsuspecting South Africans. In Bethlehem a farming town a few hours away from Johannesburg, farmer, Jesse De Klerk is fed up.
Farming communities around the country are being targeted daily and are calling for help from authorities – the Â鶹ԼÅÄ’s Vumani Mkhize visited the town of Bethlehem to find out how widespread the problem is.
