Rescuers in China say they've spoken to a group of gold miners who've been trapped underground for more than a week. A phone line has been lowered into a shaft at the site in Shandong province.

Twelve people are stuck hundreds of metres below the surface after an explosion and ten others are missing. The miners managed to send a note to rescue teams asking for medicine and supplies.

So what can be done in such dramatic situations? Andrew Watson, a mine safety consultant with MRS Training & Rescue told us more.
