Karen Collins grows her own willow on her farm in Moray, harvests it, then teaches others how to create their own artwork from materials grown sustainably.
βWhen my hands are busy my mindβs not chattering.β Karen Collins grows her own willow on her farm in Moray, harvests and dries it, then teaches members of her community how to use basket-weaving techniques to create their own pieces of art. Although there is a traditional element to basket-weaving, the endless possibilities of the material allow individual artistic works to be produced.
Karen also finds that the act of creating art out of materials sourced from the land is something which brings people together, even to the point of finding that some people come along to weave their own coffins. One mother and daughter attended together to turn raw fleece into a beautiful burial shroud for the daughter before she passed away, the act of creating the piece together providing them with some comfort in the saddest of times.
