The Art of Sculpture

Scottish sculptor David J Mitchell is one of only a handful of young artists in the country choosing a traditional sculpting practice.

While studying at art school, one of David J Mitchell’s lecturers told the class: β€œAnything can be a sculpture. Even a smell can be a sculpture”. To David, this modern assessment doesn’t ring true - he’s one of only a handful of young sculptors in the country choosing a traditional sculpting practice.
Having just completed a restoration of the five massive figures that reside in Glasgow’s Citizen’s Theatre, including Robert Burns and William Shakespeare, David shares his lengthy artistic process, from wire armature to casting and moulding, that eventually leads to a figure being immortalised in sculpture.
