Hundreds sign petition to stop Weymouth Town Council beach kiosk takeover

Nearly 1500 people have signed a petition to save a popular Weymouth seafront kiosk from being taken over by the town Council.

Peter Townsend has run Aunty Vi's cafe on Brunswick Terrace for more than 14 years after initially investing Β£40,000 into the business at the request of the local authority.

But the lease expires at the end of March 2021, and Weymouth Town Council want to operate their own catering service on the site with capital costs of just under Β£58,000.00, employing one full time supervisor, supported by seasonal staff.

The family say government guidelines on procurement issued to UK Councils that would allow an extension of the lease by 12 months during Covid-19 haven't been fully considered by the Weymouth Town Council, and questioned why that option has been overlooked.

Weymouth Town Council told Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Solent "there are not any provisions for an extension in the lease, and no Covid-19 circumstances which would justify an extension".
