Classics with NOW: Berg, ‘Three Pieces for Orchestra’
Alban Berg composed ‘Three Pieces for Orchestra’ between 1913 and 1915, dedicating it to his teacher and friend, Arnold Schönberg.
Three Pieces for Orchestra evolved from project Berg had intended to be a symphony, and the piece has somewhat of a symphonic structure, despite being having different proportions and themes to a traditional symphony.
The three pieces consist of:
1. Präludium (Prelude)
2. Reigen (Round Dance)
3. Marsch (March)
This recording is from a performance which took place at St David’s Hall in 2009, with conductor Jac Van Steen. Eclectic, expressive and feverish, Berg’s ‘Three Pieces for Orchestra’ is the energy boost you need for a Friday afternoon!
