My mother the former child soldier
Adhel Arop is a young Canadian film-maker who was born in a refugee camp in Kenya. She was brought to North America as a youngster and, later on, embraced a fulfilling career as a model, a poet and an artist exploring her South Sudanese heritage.
But when she discovered her mother and aunties had been child soldiers in the South Sudan Liberation Army, the SPLA, she decided to explore their experiences in a documentary called βWho Am Iβ. It's being screened for the first time in Vancouver today.
"A part of me always knew there was something different about her. The way she carried herself, her silence and her stoic behaviour, it always made me wonder if there was something deeper."
