Orchestras and choirs around the world have been hit hard by coronavirus, with performances still unable to take place despite many countries easing restrictions.

In the early days of the pandemic, several choirs had serious outbreaks of the virus and in Washington state, 52 people out of a 61 person strong choir fell ill. Two of them sadly died.

So there is considerable anecdotal evidence suggesting that singing is a high-risk activity in spreading Covid-19, but how can we be sure?

Declan Costello is an ear, nose and throat surgeon and a keen singer himself. He has been doing research to find out how dangerous singing and playing wind instruments really is.
