"We're looking at people being marooned"
ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ owners demand Council action over Weymouth landslip.
Concerned residents living close to a landslip in Weymouth have called on Dorset Council to shore-up their road which is under threat of a further landslide within a matter of months. The original landslip happened in March this year, and at its closest point is just a couple of metres from Old Castle Road.
A Dorset Council commissioned report published on Friday last week concluded that the slip is continuing to move and could reach the road within six months to a year. The findings also stated that any further significant movement could result in the loss of some, or all, of the road.
The Council is monitoring the situation and exploring its options, but has so far failed to commit to any long term proposal.
In a statement sent to ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Solent, John Burridge, Bridges and Structures Team Leader, said:
βIβd like to reassure residents that we are doing as much as we can at present to monitor and protect Old Castle Road. The slip is on private land, that we believe has recently been sold and weβve yet to identify the new owner, which makes the situation more complicated. We are investigating the legal aspects of what work can be done and where responsibility lies.
βWeβve considered all nine recommendations in the Jacobs report, six of which are now in action. We did consider a weight restriction for Old Castle Road but the practical need for delivery vehicles and other heavy vehicles to access properties and businesses on the road has to be balanced against the current risk of landslide.
βThe final two recommendations listed in the report require access to private land, and permanent installation of equipment on it. However, a drone-based topographical survey of the slipped area will be carried out as a baseline against which any changes can be measured.β
