Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
Composer: Sergei Rachmaninov
Performer: Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Philharmonic Orchestra
Performer: Christian Hadland (Piano)
Conductor: Philippe Bach
Date of broadcast: 29 February 2012
What Paganini could do with the violin, Rachmaninov could achieve on the piano. In one of his masterpieces, the Russian takes a theme from the Italian virtuoso and - in 24 sections - turns the melody inside out, thrills the audience and terrifies the pianist. Composed in the Swiss summer of 1934, Rachmaninov himself gave the premiere performance in November and recorded it on Christmas Eve of the same year.
