Auerbach's symphony is written for solo violin, choir, and orchestra. The solo violin performs the lead role of a travelling music storyteller who introduces a collection of wondrous tales. The work takes the young listener on a voyage of imagination through its childlike and humorous nonsense poems, reminiscent of the traditional Old English bard whose songs told embellished and exotic tales. It also draws inspiration from the menagerie, a diverse collection of creatures and curiosities, and the sideshow presentation of oddities and the bizarre.
