Often considered the composer's masterpiece, Haydn is quoted as having begged God to let him finish the work, knowing midway through writing that he was creating something spectacular. The oratorio celebrates the creation of the world as told in the Book of Genesis, and to reflect this Haydn used a big, monumental sound, with many singers and large orchestral forces. The chorus moments are always triumphant, and the work features crowd pleaser after crowd pleaser, some of the most loved and life-affirming music he ever wrote.
