Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major, H 7b 1
Composer: Joseph Haydn
Performers: Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scottish Symphony Orchestra
Performer: Alban Gerhardt (Cello)
Conductor: Ilan Volkov
Recording date: 31 May 2001
This witty concerto, composed in the early 1760s but lost until its rediscovery in 1961, is notoriously difficult for cellists. It displays the whole range of the instrument, from low rumbling chords to high semiquaver passages. The first movement displays these technical demands for the cello and orchestra. The second movement is stately and more relaxed, although the technical fireworks return in the dazzling finale. This is one of the truly great classical concertos!
