Symphony No. 7 in C Major Op 105
Composer: Jean Sibelius
Performers: ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Symphony Orchestra
Conductor: Eva Ollikainen
Recording date: 04 February 2020
Date of broadcast: 04 March 2020
Unlike Beethoven, Schubert or Bruckner before him, Sibelius was happy to end his symphonic output at 7 rather than 9. This symphony is a single movement work with everything, fusing elements of a scherzo, a tender slow movement and even a Rondo β where a principal theme is alternated with contrasting ones. The final chord is like an abrupt scream for some listeners, but, βthe grandest celebration of C major there ever was,β for others.
