Violin Concerto in E minor, Op 64
Composer: Felix Mendelssohn
Performers: Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Scottish Symphony Orchestra
Performer: Alina Ibragimova (Violin)
Conductor: Christoph Koenig
Date of broadcast: 21 November 2005
Undoubtedly the best violin concerto of the first half of the 19th century, this piece possesses the hallmark of all Mendelssohn's great works: compelling, memorable tunes coupled with perfect structure. Mendelssohn opens with a melody that would be more at home in a synagogue than a cathedral. The work's finale is inspired; as playful in ending as the beginning was serious.
