Herrmann wrote the music for seven Alfred Hitchcock films. His music for 'Psycho' is perhaps the most iconic, although the score for Vertigo is often considered his greatest achievement. The 'Love Scene' is written for tender strings, but is simultaneously shot through with remorse and uncertainty, reflecting the the action on-screen. Herrmann's theme, played as the character metaphorically brings his lost love back through another woman, is given another layer of meaning with a paraphrase of Wagner's Liebestod (love-death) from 'Tristan and Isolde'.
