English footballing legend and 'Match of the Day' presenter Gary Lineker has told Newsnight he is proud of this generation of footballers and praised the bravery of players to "stick their head above the parapet".

Speaking to Emily Maitlis, the former professional footballer was discussing an intervention by Manchester United's Marcus Rashford, who has called on the government to reverse a decision not to provide free school meal vouchers during the summer.

Gark Lineker told the programme he believed that the England player "is doing a great job trying to get the government to U-turn", and said that while he understands that "kids wouldn't ordinarily be fed during the summer holidays", these are "very, very difficult times".

The Department for Education said it would not reverse its decision and provide free schools vouchers during the summer.

In the studio, Emily Maitlis is also joined by Sir Michael Wilshaw was the Chief Inspector of Schools In England and head of Ofsted from 2012 until 2016.
