Eric Garner's mother speaks out on police brutality

On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner died after a New York City Police Department officer, put him in what's been described as an illegal chokehold while arresting him for the sale of bootleg cigarettes. Video footage of the incident was seen by millions around the world and raised questions about the appropriate use of force by law enforcement.

Eric Garner repeated the words β€˜I can’t breathe’ eleven times while laying face down on the pavement. The words became the rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement and is once again being called out after the death George Floyd, who also used the phrase as a police officer in Minnesota pressed his knee into his neck.

Eric Garner's mother, Gwen Carr, told ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Newsday how she was coping in light of recent protests.
