Tiananmen anniversary: Protestors call for vigil despite ban

Pro-democracy campaigners have been protesting inside Hong Kong's legislative council as lawmakers vote on the first of a new raft of security bills which include restrictions on the freedom of speech. It all comes on the 31st anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown which is usually marked in the territory with candlelit vigils and protests. These are banned this year because of coronavirus lockdown rules but activists say they will still be on the streets.

One man who had a role in the Tiananmen Square demonstrations is Lee Cheuk-yan, chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China.

"Anything that is critical of China will be seen as subversion."
