Uncovering clues about the first slaves in Latin America
Researchers have found what they believe are the skeletons of some of the first African people enslaved and transported to Latin America by Spanish conquistadors around five hundred years ago.
DNA from the three skeletons, which were unearthed in a mass grave in Mexico City, showed they had been born in different parts of Africa and had short and brutal lives. Dr Johannes Krause from the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History explains the story.
