Georgia re-opens as the US nears a million coronavirus cases
At one point, 90% of the US population was under lockdown.
That is no longer the case as a number of US states begin to lift the severe restrictions on activity, though leaders warn social distancing measures will need to continue through the summer.
In Georgia, Republican Governor Brian Kemp has sought to lift some of the restrictions early - and received a public rebuke from President Trump who said he strongly disagreed with the decision.
Businesses will be opened on a limited basis and subject to restrictions, following guidance from state public health officials and local data.
With 26 million Americans seeking unemployment protection, and the country hitting 16% unemployment, the economic chaos prompted by the coronavirus response is too urgent to avoid for many regional leaders.
