In 2010, artist John McNaught had a stroke that almost claimed his life. Painting became part of his recovery.

In 2010, artist John McNaught had a stroke that almost claimed his life. Prior to this, John had been working full-time as a painter and decorator, but when he woke up a week after his stroke, he couldn’t speak or walk. He lost all movement on the right-hand side of his body and was eventually recommended art class as part of his rehabilitation. Initially reluctant to take part, John’s wife Trisha signed him up, which meant he had to learn how to draw with his left hand from scratch.

John soon discovered he had a talent for art, and that has grown into a love which sees him creating work in his shed in his garden every day. John has spent the last decade painting and considers it one of the reasons he is here today.
