Coronavirus: What can we learn from Italy’s lockdown?

Italy has extended its strict coronavirus quarantine measures, which include a ban on public gatherings, to the entire country.

More than 60 million people in Italy have been placed under lockdown.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said that people would only be permitted to travel for work or family emergencies.

He said the measures, which came into effect on Tuesday, were to defend the most fragile members of society.

Italy's coronavirus death toll jumped on Monday by 97 to 463. It is the worst-hit country after China.

Cases of the virus have been confirmed in all 20 Italian regions.

Austria has also announced a ban on Italians entering the country unless they carry a medical certificate, in an attempt to stop coronavirus spreading.

Emily Maitlis speaks to Stuart Neil, Head of Infectious Diseases at King’s College London and intensive care consultant, Dr Carl Waldmann.
