Gary Kirsten: South Africa batsman funds Khayelitsha youth cricket

Through his charitable foundation, former South Africa batsman Gary Kirsten has built an all weather, synthetic grass cricket oval in Khayelitsha - A mostly single story neighbourhood, situated 30km south east of the iconic Newlands venue, that’s home to a million mostly black and disadvantaged people.

In the past, cricket was only rarely played in the football mad community, and when it was played, the facilities were often basic.

Prior to the new pitch, the sport was often played on sand and gravel - and a wicket consisted of just a piece of rolled out carpet.

It's hoped that young players can now dream of one day representing their country.
