Can scientists protect whales by monitoring them from space?
The New England Aquarium and engineering firm Draper Laboratory have teamed up to monitor the creatures from space. Using data from satellites, sonar and radar, they hope to have a much clearer idea of whales' movements and what causes them to change habits. The North Atlantic right whale is one of the worlds most endangered large whale species, with only an estimated 418 remaining. Newsday spoke to John Irvine, chief scientist for data analytics at Draper Laboratory in Massachusetts.
