On 27 February 1854 Schumann attempted suicide. The act by Brahms’ mentor and his growing love for Schumann’s wife spurred Brahms to write this piano concerto. Impassioned, tumultuous yet caring and sensitive, it is an original which Brahms’ contemporaries booed at its premiere.
