The opening of Mahler's first symphony is his love letter to nature. Its famous opening features a unison drone across seven octaves in the strings to create its expansive atmosphere. The rest of the symphony is varied, moving from the funeral march of the third movement (which uses the Frère Jacques melody as its basis) to the violence of the finale. Folksongs, military fanfares, and sounds of nature abound in this score.
