Why has Avengers actor Jeremy Renner shut down his app?
The actor Jeremy Renner, best-known for his role as Hawkeye in the Avengers films, has shut down his official app after it was hijacked by trolls.
The app was created in 2017, and was a way for fans to communicate with each other. Renner also regularly posted exclusive images and content on the app, and sometimes messaged users.
But people then found a way to impersonate the actor on the app, seemingly because there was no way to verify the identity of people who downloaded it. They also posed as other users.
Apologising, Renner said: "What was supposed to be a place for fans to connect with each other has turned into a place that is everything I detest and can't or won't condone."
Kate Knibbs is a journalist and has been on the app since it was launched.
