Iranian boats 'attempted to intercept British tanker'

Britain says three Iranian vessels have attempted to impede the passage of a British oil tanker in disputed territorial waters in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iranian boats were driven away by the HMS Montrose - a British navy ship which had been escorting the tanker.

Iran has already threatened to seize a British ship, in retaliation for the seizure of an Iranian tanker suspected of smuggling oil to Syria in breach of European Union sanctions last week.

Iran's revolutionary guard has denied it tried to seize the tanker.

Richard Spencer - Middle East Correspondent for The Times newspaper - has been following the story.
