Perfect endings and new beginnings in Japan
The Pine Islands is by Marion Poschmann and it's translated by Jen Calleja. Gilbert Silvester is an academic but not a distinguished one. When he has an alarming dream that his wife has cheated on him he flees, inexplicably, to Japan. Whilst there he decides to follow in the footsteps of the poet Basho in the company of a suicidal young student named Yosa. This is the story of the transformations we seek and the transformations that we do not.
