I hid my Brummie accent to get ahead in the art world
βCulture would be pretty bland if it was just one type of person always finding their way to the top. My story is: Iβm female, Iβm working class, and Iβm from the Midlands. I deserve to have a voice in this.β Laura Footes is an artist based in London, but is originally from Birmingham. Although sheβs proud of where sheβs from, Laura says she hid her Brummie accent when she started out in the art world, adopting different mannerisms and cultural tastes as she sought to become more socially mobile. While her parents have noticed their daughter's new βairs and gracesβ, they're both super supportive of her career. Laura explains how her struggle with her origins has now come full circle, and she has started embracing where she comes from in her work.
