I hid my Brummie accent to get ahead in the art world

β€œCulture would be pretty bland if it was just one type of person always finding their way to the top. My story is: I’m female, I’m working class, and I’m from the Midlands. I deserve to have a voice in this.” Laura Footes is an artist based in London, but is originally from Birmingham. Although she’s proud of where she’s from, Laura says she hid her Brummie accent when she started out in the art world, adopting different mannerisms and cultural tastes as she sought to become more socially mobile. While her parents have noticed their daughter's new β€œairs and graces”, they're both super supportive of her career. Laura explains how her struggle with her origins has now come full circle, and she has started embracing where she comes from in her work.
