A survivor on escaping Auschwitz and the new opera on his life
On Sunday, the world marked Holocaust Remembrance Day but here in Britain a recent survey suggests that many people are unaware of the scale of the systematic murder of Jewish people across countries once controlled by Nazi Germany and its allies during the 1930's and 40's. 'Push', an opera composed by Howard Moody, hopes to ensure that the survivors of the Holocaust are never forgotten. It tells the story of Simon Gronowski, who was 11 years old when he escaped a train on its way to the Auschwitz concentration camp. He survived the war and is now 87 years old. He told Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Newsday's Nikki Jecks how he managed to flee.
