Photographing the mothers of IS fighters
Poulomi Basu is an Indian documentary photographer who has been described as a visual activist for her fearless examination of the world. Her lens focuses on stories that often go ignored or underreported, particularly those of women in isolated communities and conflict zones. In 2015 she travelled to Belgium to photograph the mothers of foreign fighters who had left the country to join the so-called Islamic State. One of the women was Saliha Ben Ali whose 19-year-old son, Sabri, was killed four months after he travelled to Syria in 2013.
