In the 1970 World Cup in Mexico Gordon Banks pulled off what is widely regarded as the greatest ever save from a goalkeeper by denying Pele what looked like a certain goal. Brazil and England were at the meridian of their might heading into the 1970 World Cup. England were the reigning champions and had, consensually, an even better side than the one that conquered four years earlier but the result of this epic match meant that the winners of the showdown would effectively seal qualification to the knockout phase.
